AD | Making A House Our Home – Autumn Touches
“Autumn…the year’s last, loveliest smile.”
― John Howard Bryant
I know I sound like a broken record, but I love autumn. It is without a doubt, the best season. The changing colours, the cosy nights, my birthday and the fact I can wear chunky knitwear every single day (I’m currently on the hunt for some lovely maternity knitwear…)
Since autumn has crept in, I found myself desperate to add autumnal touches around our home…
Our bedroom is slowly coming together. We decided we would paint the majority of the room white, and have a feature wall behind our bed – we chose Dulux’s Proud Peacock and I absolutely love it.
When it came to choosing bedding, we wanted something that would complement the colour of the feature wall. Fortunately, Julian Charles provided the perfect choice – the Connor Geo Print Ochre Reversible Duvet Set* from their Hygge range. It’s part of their AW19 selection, which is absolutely stunning – whether you like simple and delicate designs or want to go bold with autumnal florals, checked patterns or even novelty Christmas characters, there is something for everyone. There is a gorgeous selection of matching accessories too, we were lucky enough to be sent the Velvet Ochre Bedspread* and Velvet Ochre Boudoir Cushion* as well, and they are all absolutely beautiful. The quality is great, and I think the colours are perfect for autumn.
We hadn’t really put up many photos or prints around our home, mainly as we were so indecisive about what should go where, but there are a couple of extremely autumnal pieces that have made their way to our walls.
Sam and I got married two years ago, on a fairly chilly day in November, and one of my favourite photos from the day is one of Dougie playing in the autumn leaves. My sister and her husband (who took the photo) kindly got it printed onto a canvas for us, and that was the first picture I put up. Yes, it will stay up all year round, but the colours are just so beautifully autumnal I had to share it!
I’ve got a gorgeous custom canvas from Jemma, and I’ve put it up next to my desk, and I feel all cosy and autumnal every time I see it.
Autumn just screams candles, cosy blankets and pumpkins. We always have candles around the house, but I feel the need to get orange and red ones as soon as September hits. The lovely Chloe gave me a gorgeous Wild Honeysuckle candle from Wax Lyrical – it smells incredible and the colours on the tin are beautiful. I’m actually not a huge fan of pumpkin-scented or spiced candles, I find them quite overpowering, so this is perfect.
For my birthday, Abbey got me the most beautiful autumnal wreath, and I’ve completely fallen in love with it. Not only is it ideal for using in bookstagram photos, but it looks beautiful on the wall. I was going to put it on our front door, but I wanted to be able to see it!
Cushions and throws are a must for autumn hibernation. I’m now 27 weeks pregnant, and so my evenings tend to involve wrestling my toddler into bed and then collapsing onto the sofa with a hot chocolate (another autumn essential) and a book (or This Is Us/Gilmore Girls/Great British Bake Off!) Obviously this means I need plenty of blankets and cushions, and I even have a handmade, personalised cushion created by the amazing Amy. I couldn’t believe it when I opened the parcel, it was so thoughtful and the embroidery detail is amazing.
We also have conkers dotted around the windowsill – someone told me they help keep out spiders?! – I’m not convinced I believe this but the conkers look cute! We’ve also got a few pumpkins from our trip to Garsons Farm which are now sitting happily by our fireplace.
Have you brought any autumnal details into your home?
