One year old

Today Dougie is one year old. I know I’ve said this a thousand times, but I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone.

Dougie arrived nine days late, at 2:17pm on Saturday 17th September 2016. We came home the following day and started our lives as a family.

(One day old)

I’ve watched him grow from a tiny chubby bundle who wanted feeding all the time into a little boy, who crawls faster than I can walk, goes up and down stairs like a pro, and is trying desperately to walk.

(Four days old)

He sleeps through the nights more often than not, but we still have to rock him to sleep, and when we have bad nights, they’re really bad. I never realised how fidgety and wriggly babies could be. When we can’t get him to settle, I’ll sleep in the nursery with him, and it’s like I’m his personal climbing frame, he clambers all over me trying to get comfy. He’s been ill this week, so he slept with/on me a couple of times. I dozed off at one point and woke up to find him using my ankles as a pillow. I can’t imagine it was that comfy, but whatever works…

He’s learnt how to give kisses before bedtime, and he says goodnight to all his monkey toys before we settle him down for the night. He loves Spot the Dog books, although he ripped off most of the flaps as soon as he understood that there were pictures behind them. If I sit on the floor with my legs outstretched with a book, he crawls over and sits on my knee and listens to me read. Hey Duggee is the only TV show he’ll watch, he doesn’t have any interest when the TV is on otherwise, but he bops around to the theme tune and I know it calms him down when he’s sad.

He’s got six teeth now, and he loves grinding them, which is one of the most horrible sounds I’ve ever heard! Watermelon, apple, fish and Weetabix are his favourite food, although he can be fussy at times.

We’ve visited Edinburgh, Brighton, Bath and Portugal and we’re planning a family holiday for next year.

(Portugal. He did smile sometimes on this trip…)

He started nursery at the beginning of the month. I think he’s enjoying it, although he still fights naps, which means he’s exhausted when I collect him at lunch, and then he spends most of the afternoon napping!

He took his first few steps, so we had to take him to get his feet measured and buy him his first shoes. He also got his first proper coat, which is adorable.

He loves playing with other babies, and I’m so glad that we have our NCT friends close by for regular playdates. We’ve been to a few first birthday parties now – bubbles and baby-friendly pizza are a big hit.

He blows raspberries every time he hears the word “sausages” for whatever reason. We finally dismantled his Jumperoo and have replaced it with a pop-up tent thing from IKEA which he’s enjoying.

I know that when I’m sad or tired or fed up, all he has to do is beam at me, or frantically crawl over and sit on my lap and then nothing else matters any more and it’s all worth it. I can’t believe how much he’s grown over the year, and I can’t wait to see what the next year brings.

Happy Birthday Dougie 💙💙💙
